Xani and Sara rose the next morning at 5.00am, dressed, ate a quick breakfast, and were waiting outside the hotel by 5.50am. Very soon, a coach full of people, pulled up alongside them and the doors opened. Xani climbed on first, bag over one shoulder, camera hanging from her neck, followed by Sara. Ben was sitting on a seat only two rows behind the driver and had saved a seat beside him and the one behind him. Xani took a seat beside him and Sara took the one behind him. She was seated next to a middle-aged woman who was dressed in long shorts and a shirt and runners on her feet. Like everyone else on the bus, she had a camera draped around her neck. Sara gave a polite smile at the woman as she sat down and the woman smiled back, then turned to look out the window. Sara leaned over the seats to stick her head in between Xani and Ben. The seat in front of Ben and Xani was vacant, reserved for the tour guide.
âGood morning,â Ben cheerfully greeted both of them.
âGood morning,â the girls replied in unison. Xani was about to delve into a conversation about the previous afternoon when she was interrupted by the tour guide. He was a short man in his late fifties, but seemed friendly and knowledgeable. His once dark hair was now peppery and his handsome face was blemished with more than a few wrinkles. His dark skin had seen a lifetime in the sun. He was wearing long khaki shorts and a white polo shirt with the emblem of the tour company embroidered on the pocket. He held a microphone in one hand.
âFor those of you who have just boarded, good morning and welcome to Mayan Tours,â the tour guide's voice came over the PA system, in a thick accent. âMy name is Fernando and I will be your tour guide today. We have a long drive ahead of us, but once there, we will explore the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza. We will be leaving in a moment for our destination, but first, just a couple of housekeeping items.â He scanned the faces of the bus and his eyes fell on someone he recognized sitting on the rear seat. This man was dressed neatly in beige slacks and a cream colored shirt and white loafers. He paused in his speech for a moment as his mind processed first the one seated in the centre of the long seat, then the two other figures sitting either side of this formidable man â it seemed like a scene from a gangster movie to Fernando. When Cizin winked at the tour guide, he quickly resumed his speech. âFirstly, if there is an accident, and we need to evacuate the bus, there is an emergency window at the rear of the bus. Secondly, there is a bathroom at the rear of the bus if you need it. And thirdly, there is no eating or drinking on the bus.
